Back to the Workbench

Getting back to the bench is always tough for me after a hiatus. I was ready for the holidays early (this is a first) and had all my pieces out in stores, and my online Etsy store stocked well. That gave me time to concentrate, on the house, the guests coming to visit, the cooking, working and last minute everything that I had put off to make jewelry :)

This year, I have decided to get back into shows and festivals, and my first one is Feb 1, 2014!!! Right around the corner! I am really excited. I have ordered my Square, a new banner and  new displays. I am one step closer. I need to buckle down, get a booth idea sketched out and get new items rolling out. Now sitting back at my workbench, ideas are there, I am just slow to produce them. My mind seems to be elsewhere.

To combat this, I put on music and randomly string. I do not commit the design, I just string, unstring, string, unstrings. Next thing you know, I have some ideas that actually are working for me, and I am excited to start on a new creations.

Here is a bit of a preview of what I am working on!

I hope this new year takes you on many magical adventures!

Tie Dye T Shirt Necklace How To

This is such a cute and EASY idea. The variations are endless.

I used a 2T shirt

Cut the band off the bottom

Cut the shirt across in strips. Thin or thick, each will give a variation in the look of the necklace

Drop the strips over your index fingers, like you are playing a string game :)

Now pull...PUlling will add a curl to the strips and lengthen them. If you cut the strips thin, don't pull too hard, they will break.  Sorry or the dark picture.

Now you have the focal for your necklace, add chain, beads, silk - you choose, and make your creation!!!

Soon I will show you what I make with the left over pieces of the shirt!

I FOUND MY CAMERA!!!!

Amember these beads I won?

I love them so much. I did have a hard time deciding what to do with them, because they were just too cute to look at in a pile :)

I couldn't separate them, they were just so happy together, so I incorporated the most of them into this multi-strand necklace!

I used a t-shirt that was tie tyed by my friend Todd and created this! This is a FUN colorful design that I will post a tutorial on soon!
Now that I have my camera back - I'll have more posts coming soon!!!

More in the Jo Jo Collection

My daughter has sent me several images of the jewelry she likes and always asks - "Can you make this?" What I have noticed is the use of ribbon in so many pieces. I didn't have ribbon, but I have a ton of fabric.

I cut a thin piece of fabric and 'distressed' it to use it for the accent of this piece. I had some earrings I was going to re purpose - they were a perfect match!

It is fun and trendy and youthful. I don't intend to grow up, so I may wear it too!

Sometimes while I am making a new piece, it will remind me of a person. This reminded me of my daughter. She loves a non traditional piece that will go with everything, or even more fun, clash with EVERYTHING! She loves her accessories to make a statement.

I had that pendant for ever and finally got around to working it into a piece. It is daring with the asymmetrical design and the mixing of copper and sterling.

This one is a lot of fun

ArtBeads Colors of Fall Design Partner Challenge!

ArtBeads did a great design partner challenge this go around using the 2010 Fall color pallet as the guide. Choose components that co ordinate with the color pallet as your challenge. Great colors for fall this year:

Fall is a beautiful time of year, especially in the south. Coming out of those long hot dog days of summer into the clear crisp fall days is such a treat. Fall lasts longer here, mixing with the final hues of summer, the colors are amazing. As the summer fades, you still see scants of green hanging from tree branches heading into their winter slumber.

You ever smell grapes in the fall - right after a frost?? OMG - the best smell in the world. The leaves turn brown and the little vine "curly Q's" come peaking out, and there are just a couple little green grapes left. That was the inspiration for these earrings. Using the Fire-Polished Bead 8mm Opaque Turqoise Picasso beads (FPS-PI-OTU8) to represent the grapes, and hung them from copper curls - they look like little grapes don't they?? :)

Then you have all of those wonderful fall colors, warm and bright. Picasso glass from Art Beads, (white and turquoise) along with mookite make fun clusters at the bottom of this necklace.

This is a fun, almost beachy style necklace. Leather thong with copper coils to hold it together in a faux bolo style. The grouping of beads hanging from the ends look like groups of leaves hanging low on branches. There is a hint of sparkle from the Swarovski crystals, like that sparkle of dew in the mornings.

It has a fun and off center style.

Have you seen the colors on fire during the autumn sunset? Love the horizon during the fall. The sun is most spectacular during the fall.

There are more great designs to come using great supplies from Art Beads!!

Stay tuned!

Summer Fun

I am not ready to let go of summer :)

I had that little focal for a while. Just a little plastic textured star with a tiny purple flaw. Embrace the flaw I say, and use it to bring the design together.

4 separate strands -
One of random beads from the Designer collection (this was a close out deal, but you should see their bead assortments!! ) at Rings & Things
One of seed bead - peridot - from Michaels
One of seed beads - lilac (Michales), with added dyed crazy lace agate coins from Sedona Stones
And the last of light blue seed beads and the strand woven thru the design to give it a floating feel.

This piece thrills me - It is so fun to wear, and a real mood lifter!

Turquoise for Decembers birthstone

I have always been drawn to a more hand crafted style of jewelry, which is why I think I have always stayed away from the traditional birthstones, and the traditional settings. Growing up, I remember traditionally, blue topaz as the birthstone of December. Until I started researching for this post. I had intended on writing about turquoise being the non-traditional birthstone for December, but the more I read, the more it appears that turquoise has been considered the traditional birthstone for some time now. When I discovered that there are in fact non-traditional birthstones, it was very exciting to me. It allowed me to wear my "birthstone", and be the unique individual that I am and not look like my jewelry had been stamped out of a catalog.

It is said that turquoise gets it name because it was brought to Europe by way of Turkey. It was considered by ancients to be a sacred stone, protecting the wearer from evil. It was also one of the first stones used in jewelry. Turquoise is the stone of communication and great friendship. Giving a gift of turquoise is the sign of a true friend.

You will see turquoise sold in many different ways - natural, stabilized, enhanced, and reconstituted(pressed) - natural being the most expensive.

Stabilized turquoise: Turquoise can be very porous and fragile depending on the source. This involves soaking the rough material in an artificial resin or impregnating it with wax, to improve its color, to harden its surface for cutting or to maintain its appearance and strength over time. American turquoise is very porous and quite crumbly to work with, so it is nearly always stabilized or coated in some way.

Enhanced turquoise:Means just that - the color of the turquoise has been enhanced. Oil, paraffin or copper salt are used to improve color and luster, most times only leaving temporary results. One way to check for enhancement is to look inside the holes of beads or scratch the turquoise with a sharp point the interior of the bead or scratch mark will be a lighter color than the exterior.

Reconstructed or pressed turquoise: (very common)Turquoise powder and small chips are bonded with liquid plastic resin, dyed and then baked. Once the material is solid, it is cut in the same way as natural turquoise and can be dyed to various colors, including the expensive dark blues and sky blues. One way to tell for sure is by heating a small piece of turquoise. It will produce the sharp odor of burnt plastic.

Unless you are looking for the just the 'turquoise color' - don't be fooled by imposters. You will see dyed howlite, dyed magnesite, and dyed resin being passed off as turquoise. There is a heft and 'glassy' feel to howlite. The veins in howlite can be too regular as well. Magnesite can be a tough one to distinguish from turquoise. It can be light weight like turquoise and 'waxy' as well. The one quick way to know is the price. If you are getting big chunks or slabs of 'turquoise' and it is below 20 bucks - most likely it isn't. Turquoise is sold by the gram by most vendors who have the real thing.

Two great places to get turquoise on line is Rings & Things and Art Beads. They tell you exactly what you are getting, and they are priced just right.

Here are some great examples from Rings & Things

Bead, Gemstone, 8-12mm Nugget (Chinese Turquoise)*

Bead, Gemstone, Nugget, Medium (Turquoise) *

A great selection from Art Beads -

Irregular Stabilized Chinese Turquoise Heishi Beads *

Irregular Stabilized Turquoise Flat Pear Drops *

So many ways to showcase turquoise -

Accented with bali style spacers and crystals on sterling

Like a strand of turquoise pearls.

Classically strung with coral

As a focal for a pendant

Have fun with your designs. It is not your mothers turquoise anymore. No more set in heavy silver, or on thick wrist bands. Let your imagination run!!

Retail display ideas

I was recently picked up by a local retail shop, Gifts With A Heart, in Raleigh and was faced with the "display dilemma ". There is not enuff space for busts (and I prefer not to use them) T-Bars do not show case your work, the display area is limited so I can't use my props - what is an artist to do!

Oh the confines!! They burn!! They burn!!!

I took into consideration the amount of space I would have to work with and began the hunt for the perfect display piece. I happened upon the jewelry display section at Firemountain Gems and found the Chain and Necklace display, economically priced with four to a pack. I got them in black and in clear. These are quite nice and exactly what I need.

Trying to set up and take pictures for my blog can be trying at times. Meet Zeus, he demands your attention as well......

This display will hold several necklaces, allowing you to see the design front on, as opposed to a side veiw.

The other bonus to this type of display, is it allows me to add my business card to the tag of each necklace, because the tags hang behind the display!

Let me explain :)

I took advantage of the fact that the store owner allowed me to use my business cards and encouraged me to market myself. (some don't believe it or not) One other thing to take into consideration in a set up like this, if a customer has a question about the components of the piece, unless the sales clerk is familiar with all of the products, the customer may not get their answer.

Let's solve this, shall we :)

I used shipping labels and printed them out with information about each piece.

Applied the label to the back of one of my business cards, added a colorful stamp to make the price easy to find, added the inventory number to the corner, popped a hole in it and tied it with ribbon to the jewelry.

All the informaiton the store owner needs and the customer wants to know is all right there, and allows me to do a bit of advertising.

Nice, tidy, neat display, takes up next to no space, and can hold up to 12 pieces. Perfect.

October Bead Trends

The October issue of Bead Trends is on the stands. I am thrilled to have two pieces in this months issue.

One is from a Rings & Things blogger challenge from back in April or May. I call it 'Char'd and Chunky'. It is a fun piece, with multi strands. It appears bulky, but don't let the size of the beads fool you, these lava beads are light. I had a lot of fun with this combination - over the top naturally textured lava beads accented with dainty shiney swarovski crystals. You just wouldn't think to put the two together.

The other piece is a fun whimsical piece I call Patsy's Candy. I was in Illinois visiting my daughter when I found the focal for this piece. We went to tons of little shops on the main street of her town looking for treasures. These little glass candies bring back so many memories for me as a kid. I remember my mom having a bowl of glass candies. I use to love them. I loved them so much, that many years later I started my own collection of these glass goodies. I thought it would be fun to showcase the candy as the focal on a necklace. I wanted to keep it young/hip.
