Unakite and Garnet on Copper Bracelet - Jewelry with Meaning -

Unakite and garnet can both be found and mined in North Carolina! I love this and being a rock hound, have done my fair share running up and down creek beds looking for fun stone, minerals, crystals and more.

Did you know, Unakite is named after the Unakas Mts, where it was first discovered, right here in North Carolina.   Makes me happy to call this home.

These two stones are a great combination as well, with its properties of gentleness and love.

Garnet cleanses and re energizes the chakras. It revitalizes, purifies and balances energy, bringing serenity or passion as appropriate. ... Garnet balances the sex drive and alleviates emotional disharmony. It activates and strengthens the survival instinct, bringing courage and hope.

Unakite Jasper brings together the abundant, nurturing energy of green with the soft, caring passion of pink in one of Nature's most healing crystals of the heart and mind. It resonates with the frequency of love, compassion and kindness, and is a stone dedicated to balancing the emotional body.

Faceted Fancy Jasper in a New Autumn Necklace

The weather has been glorious the past few days. Really putting me in the mood for fall.

I grabbed that fall muse by the hand and ran down the path of creativity giggling all the way. I have been very happy with myself the past few days, being able  to find time to create more jewelry and get it posted online.

This one is really a favorite of what I have been doing. These stones together have a beautiful offering of peace and gentleness. TTiny faceted fancy jasper beads are the accent to the piece, with a rose colored ceramic pendant. I added the tree agate, because summer is not yet over, and there is still plenty of green to be had. It is a nice splash of color, just like what is in my yard, and the fancy jasper is the leaves that have just started to fall, and are scattered around.

Notice how there are three seed beads between each of the stones, expect for in one spot. I do this intentionally. It is a signature so to speak. Yes there is a pattern, but everyonceinawhile, I like to mess it up, to remind myself, I am not perfect. I still have so much to learn and so much to do - if I was perfect, what else would there be?

Do you have a signature or message that you put into your designs, something that is a little bit of you?

Garnet Necklace - Commissioned Piece

Did a commission piece over the weekend. First piece off of my new workstation :) They wanted something for love, protection and clarity of thought and also something just a notch above conservative.

I wanted something light, something fun, that would work with a sundress, or with a t-shirt.

I chose garnet, citrine and agate and threw in mother of pearl for accent for the stone combination, which worked out perfectly for the beach pallet for summer 2011.

Garnet:Remove negativity, romantic love, passion, sensuality, intimacy, career success, selfconfidence, awareness, commitment, regeneration, order, insight.
Citrine:Success, intuition, comfort, creativity, physical energy, wealth, mental awakening, protection, good fortune / luck,
Agate: Protection, good luck, balance body/mind/spirit, perceptiveness, strength, inspiration, awaken talents.
Mother of Pearl: Mental clarity, intuition, sensitivity, imagination, adaptability, cooperation, psychic, protection of children, purify environment.

Beach Trends for Spring/Summer 2011

Here is James doing some leveling of the hutch. He still has a few more finishing touches, trimming, etc.

But I couldn't wait. I began to organize and get stuff up off of the floor, and empty containers on my shelves. It is still a work in progress, and most likely the way I work, will always be.

What did you do over the weekend?

More pendants

I took supplies to work yesterday to beat the boredom. It is one of those boredom's that I don't want to do anything. I can't read a book, I don't want to look at the internet anymore, have no desire to play any games, just staring into space.

I am going to be creative damnit if it is the last thing I do!!!!

I took my bowl of bead soup, 4 gauges of wire, (bought 4 spools from Rings & Things, best purchase to date!) a few crystals and my tools. Now wouldn't ya know - I was busy yesterday!!!! Towards the last of my shift things started to slow down, so I put on my headphones and some good music and set out to create.

Remember those crystals I got on vacation? I wrapped one in copper and added amazonite, agate, aventurine and crystals for this success and luck pendant.

Then I used some red brass to frame a green garnet and wrapped it with copper wire and garnets with a fire polished red Czech crystal - Garnets are all about love

Time flew and my work day was over by the time I finished the garnet pendant. Now I have a three day weekend, with beautiful weather! Have a great weekend ya'all!

Answer to the challenge - Necklace of re purposed beads, vintage lucite and feldspar

Yesterday I posted about the items I challenged myself to work with. Last nite I set out on the task of creating something from those beads. I pushed the beads around on my table for quite a while trying to find something that held my interest. I was having a hard time incorporating all the pieces I had challenged myself to use. I decided to work from the focal up.

I wrapped the focal in copper and added garnets and toho beads and made dangles from the fire polished mix. I used the copper wire to make wire wrapped links for the first strand of felspar and MOP beads, and then wove hemp cord thru the links and made a second layer of hemp and vintage lucite beads.

It made a real summery, hippie exquisite necklace

These were the beads I used -
I have a MOP necklace and a garnet bracelet that was given to me to 're purpose' by my friends Harry and Vanessa
feldtv13x18 13x18mm Feldspar beads from Cherry Tree Beads
LUC2185BR Cube Beads 10mm Smoky Quartz * from Beadin Path

TOHO™ Bead Round 6/0 Opaque-Lustered Cream 8g Bag from Art Beads

Thank was a fun challenge - I may have to do it again!

A little something to hold on to

Sometimes we all need a little something to hold on to to remind us there is a higher power, or to remind us of our good qualities, or even to give us that little bit of luck we need that day.

Gemstones portray that 'little bit of something' to me. They are easy to carry around or wear as jewelry. I can easily reach up and touch a pendant as a reminder, or reach into my pocket and feel their warmth and reassurance. Silly to some I know, but it is the same as throwing salt over your shoulder when you spill it, crossing your fingers for good luck, keeping your St. Christopher metal on the rear view mirror of your car, or not jinxing your team by always wearing the same outfit to the game. All of these are our little traditions or superstitions that make us feel better about us.

With this in mind, I made this pendant for my sister in law. I chose the stones for their meanings and 'powers'. She is gentle and loving soul, her life is her family and friends, a teacher, with genius creativity.

I wrapped garnet, citrine, iolite and carnelian to the crystal, which is is the focal, which amplifies the qualities of the stones.

Garnet: Removes negativity, career success, self confidence.
Citrine: Success, intuition, creativity
Iolite: Intuition, inner knowledge
Carnelian: Creativity, peace, luck

Do you see the pattern here?

Commissioned piece - Sugilite

My friend Vanessa gave me two donuts - one for me, one for her.

She had seen my Green Man necklace and wanted something similar but with a donut. She called these Pink Sugilite. I have never heard of it and was thrilled. I have done days of searching to find out more information and wanted to share it with you.

While searching for sugilite I only found the classic purples that we all know and love, it wasn't till I did a search for lavulite, another name for sugilite, did I find examples like the donuts pictured.

Sugilite or Lavulite is a beautiful stone and a fairly recent find in the gemstone world. Named after Ken-ichi Sugi, the discoverer of the gem, sugilite was introduced in 1944. Found on Iwagi Islet in Japan, it has since been found in Canada, Africa, Australia, Italy and India.

Most of us know it like this with it's beautiful opaque waxy luster and hues that range from a pale grayish lavender to a deep dark purple. I myself perfer the darker shades, which is probably why when I was first introduced to sugilite, I got it confused with charoite all the time. Has that ever happened to you?

I had to get the researching out of my way so I could concentrate on her necklace design. Here is how it turned out.

I added the silver bells I got from Rings & Things to give it a whimsical feel, along with garnet heishi cut beads and black crystals.

It is a fun and simple design so not to draw away from that beautiful focal.

Marketing Monday

A few days ago I shared some offline marketing tips by Shelly Hill. She says you should try to do at least two a week. I was looking thru them earlier and I may jump in hip deep and try -

#42. Get some canvas tote bags printed up with your business information on them. Pass them out to a few lady friends and ask them to use them when they are out and about in the community attending events or running errands.

Everyone has become waste conscience, not wanting to use disposable bags, paper or plastic and are moving to re usable totes. It got me thinking. I don't throw away any odds and ends, because there may be a use for them down the road. I love re purposed jewelry. Breathing new life into old pieces. With that in mind I will be looking online at the likes of cafepress and zazzle and see if i can get a good price on some small totes, and start the whisper campaign :)

EDIT - This tote thing is redonkulously expensive!! I need to do some rethinking.......

I announced my monthly contest giveaway on my facebook page for July this weekend. I am offering this as the prize.

I was sluffing around this weekend, with a ho-hum kinda attitude, and thought I would make some new pieces to lift my spirits. Being that the garnet was already out, I made earrings and necklace to compliment the July's braclete give away.

I made the necklace a convertible style necklace - you can hook it at the top or the bottom of the chain link, giving it to distinct looks. I packed it full of garnet, citrine, carnelian and vintage crystals. I had no rhyme or reason behind how I attached the stones. Some had sterling beads added to them, some did not.

What are you doing to market you business?

Here is the question.
