I got my first Christmas craft idea email on Sunday....142 shopping days til Christmas.....
I haven't even dealt with end of summer yet.
I know people who shop all year - smart - they always have people in mind, they are always looking for that great sale, they are so thoughtful, they even have gifts for the post carrier. Most impressive to me, they keep things tucked away til it is time to wrap for Christmas. How do you wait all year?!?!?!? Such self control. Isn't there a box of snack cakes around here somewhere?!?
I can't do that - once I have a gift..I can hang onto it for oh, 2 hours before I have to have the satisfaction of giving the gift.
This may be partly due to the fact that I am the last minute queen of buying gifts. Uncle Bob's birthday??? Dinner at 6??? (insert cuss words) Swing by the store on the way to dinner, buy something, done!
To take the edge of Christmas shopping, my daughter and I always have some sort of theme for Christmas. Most always is hand made, and the Jo is the best at it. This year we have also added thrift store purchases, and have to keep it below $10. Fun!
Thrift store shopping is a treasure hunt, you can't just run in and buy. That email came at the perfect time. I need to start my hunt!

One more day til National Craft Month!
While on one of my many interweb adventures, I found the blog post from Fusion Beads about March being craft month. This was very exciting and very timely. Fusion Beads has a daily craft challenge posted on their blog, and one reader has pledged to have their craft room cleaned to kick of National Craft Month. I am in the middle of cleaning my room, I want to have mine clean too!!!! Now the pressure is on, because I technically have today and tomorrow to have this accomplished.
This week has been cleaning, purging, organizing, whining, donating, whining, oh - did I mention whining?
How have I accumulated so much crap?!?!?

Hello, My name is Tish McDermott and I am a craft hoarder.

It is so true, and I have come to understand this and embrace it. I even recently said no to an offer of a big stack of magazines. heh - you should have seen their face when I said no - EVERYONE knows they can off load their items on me. Not today Buckco!!
There are several things I like to do, of which you have seen pictures. My top three are jewelry, sewing and painting. My workspace, as is, will not accommodate all three. Well, I take that back, it would if I did one at a time, but I don't. I have all three going at once. That is what spawned the big clean.
I wont' post pictures yet. Some will gasp in horror, not being able to understand the tragedy of my room. Others will gasp, but inside they will be pleased. Then there one those who will cheer and scream and laugh, because they are not alone in their hoarding, AND I will make them feel good about themselves :)

Bedazzler - I haz one
Over the weekend I started my yearly clean and purge of my studio. This year, I had committed to the BIG clean. Going thru each tub, as opposed to just restacking it in an orderly fashion so it appears to be clean.
During this clean I found:
This has been an ongoing joke for the last two years between my dad and my daughter. My dad found this somewhere - flea market, thrift store, yard sale (this is where I get my hoarding from ) and he thought - Hey! Tish is crafty, she needs this..... Thanks Dad... I must have kindly accepted it, brought it home and tucked it away in my room.
Outta sight, outta mind
A looong time later, my dad had asked me if I had done anything with the bedazzler. What bedazzler? I had already forgot about it. My dad was sure that he had given it to me, and I was sure he hadn't. I told him he must have given it to Leigh, my daughter - his favorite granddaughter. He thought for a moment, and he too agreed.
Now Leigh was a different story. Between Pop and me, we have asked her 100 times bout that bedazzler. Pop wanting to know if she had it, and if she liked it, and what she has made and me saying TAKE IT TO THE GOOD WILL!!!! She insisted she didn't have it. I told her, being the mom that I am - check the garage, you still have packing boxes in there, you may have over looked it. MA! she says - I don't have the bedazzler.
Yesterday - I found it. I pulled a nondescript box from the bottom shelf, dusted it off and opened it. My shoulders slumped when I saw what was in the box, and a hiss of obscenities escaped my lips. I was defeated.
I straightened my shoulders, gathered my strength, because I knew what I had to do. I posted it on Facebook.
My daughter rejoiced! She was triumphant, she finally had proof she didn't have the blasted thing.

Retail Therapy
It seems like I am always at the store. On my lunch, after work, weekends...why can't I get myself on a schedule and get shit done?!?!
So, yesterday, I was at the store, of course on my lunch (I would much rather go on my lunch than after work) and while I was there, I just happened to wander thru the craft department.
*smacks forehead*
Why oh why? What did I buy?
I couldn't help myself. I don't scrapbook, but I had to have these things. I have a ton of ideas that I could do with these as I do with every scrap of everything that I save, it is just getting around to doing them.
Maybe I should change my diary name to confessions of a hoarder.
Oh, and just to add salt to the wound - on groupon, I bought a $100 scrapbooking kit for $25 from Webster's Pages - I thought it would be a good gift......
Intervention
Yup I am at that point.
What had happened was -
I was asked to make earrings for an upcoming wedding. I had to order the requested components, and thought to myself - "Self, see what else you need and just git 'er done" - So I did.
I added to the order some ear wires - wow silver has gotten expensive - I added bezel cups for more resin works - I added some chain - all the things I 'thought' I needed. While I was at it - I went to Vista Prints and ordered more business cards.
Order done, housework time. I started at my computer desk. Too many things piling up. Got it organized. (found a few business cards so I am not totally out) Feeling froggy - I moved into my studio. With my hands on my hips, I turned a circle in the room, surveyed the carnage, blinked back a few tears and set to work. I had found some stackable baskets that would be perfect for sorting, put them out on the work bend and got to sortin'.
Lo and behold - I found my strapless bra - hrm....
I found a moldy coffee cup - stashed under the shelf
I found my book I have been searching for (wanting to know how it ends)
I found a half a box of business cards....
I FOUND A PACKAGE OF EAR WIRES!!!!
I am furious with myself.
So my dearest darlings I have staged an intervention for myself with the help of my room mate. We are going in guns a'blazing and not stopping until it is done. Until this feat is completed, I will be on radio silence.

Welcome to My World - Life of and ADHD Jewelry Designer
While sitting at my worktable this morning, I was suddenly overwhelmed with the projects I have started, and none that I have finished. I have been operating in some sort of hyper drive these past two weeks. Ideas are racing thru my head faster than I can get them out of my fingers. I can't seem to commit to just one. I have to do them all!!!
1. A new earring design.....I can make one, but am having a hard time making the 2nd one at least similar
2. I have a bag of old pc133 memory sticks I want to do some 'Geek Chic' stuffs with......
3. Copper pendant I am working on ...... not quite happy with it yet.
4. Jo brought me a mess of old watches - I have busted them all apart and want to make something Steam Punky, or Industrial.
5. Fixing a necklace that one of the beads broke and now there is a gap in the strand.
6. Making earrings for the show I am doing on Saturday.
7. Making ear wires for the metric butt ton of earrings I have made.
I still have to finish my signage for the show, make new earring cards, wash and press my table covers, get out my newsletter, tag new items......and 100 more things I am sure I have forgotten

Redemption! Work Space is Clean!!
Back in September Dawno and Beadin Path co-sponsored a Tweet Your Studio contest. There were three categories - Best Use of Small Space, Most Organized Space, Holy Cow! How do You Work in That Space, which I won. I went back to my blog and brought a part of it forward, just to give you some back ground -
From September 30, 2009 -
Here is the picture - I have added the numbers to tell you a bit about how I work.
1. That is what I call my mail center. This where I keep my boxes, packing material, tape - things I need when I ship a package.
2. My sewing machine - broke - it is now a catch all for my other crafts that are not jewelry making.
3. That is the cover my husband made for my earring board. The earring board is a shutter that I thread the earring cards thru. The cover keeps the earrings in place when I go to shows.
4.That is the murphy bed that my husband is building - he has taken 16 inches of my studio away from me - that is why it is in such a mess, i dont' have any more room! he thinks the murphy bed will be awesome for guests.......if you stopped by for an overnite visit, would you want to stay in that room????
5.My little work table for soldering and hammering. the coffee cans?? i store the dry mix for my vibrating tumbler in them, and my raw stones that need to be tumbled. I need a wet tumbler for that, but that is another story and another cup of coffee.
6.My other sewing machine - broke - on the floor under that is stacks of folded material, another sewing machine and a surger............i have a problem i think when it comes to sewing machines.
7. stacks of folded material, batting and stuffing - it is also where my cat sleeps when i am working.
8. storage for material - now that i am trying to explain myself, i am discovering i do have a problem.......
9. I store my finished jewelry in baggies in these 2 containers
10. That is my 'show gear' when I do a show, if I have room, I take my supplies with me and craft at the table to pass away the time. It is a great conversation starter and a great way to get ppl into your booth. They want to see what you are doing and it really helps them understand that, yes, you do make all of this by hand. It also allows me to make adjustments on the fly for the customer if it is not the right size, or to make a quickie pair of matching earrings.
11. That is my work table - stacked with with bags of supplies and my tools. That little bitty space right there in the front where my pliers are laying is the space I work in. All my creations happen in a bout a 18 x 5 " space.
Spring is coming and i am getting in that spring cleaning mood - purging mood - happy mood. Yesterday morning I began to did myself out of my work room.
Today it is finished! Newd was giving the floor a final inspection for me before he went to lay down on his bed in the corner. He sighed when he lay down, I think it was a sigh of relief!
AND I CAN'T FIND A THING!!!!!!!!!!!

I have too much stuff and too little room. At the same time, I know where everything is. If you ask me for anything, remarkably, I can walk right to it. Don't ask me how I do it, I don't know. I also know if anything has been moved or if anything is missing. I have a crafting sense I guess.

Falling a bit behind
I am falling behind - can't wait for the weekend so I can re organize and get ready for another go round -
I got a letter from my Muse 'Ms. Diva' this morning.

Rings & Things blogger challenge - July *bong*
That title makes me think of Law & Order. I said it in my head with my mocking announcer voice and magically I heard the *bong* from Law & Order.
Wonder what that means???? Mebbe I should turn my head from side to side to view the piece so I get a better understanding of what it is I am trying to convey.
I looked and looked at the Gold Filled Connector. Turned it over in my fingers absent mindedly trying to think of how to use it, but not to it's full capacity. Give it new meaning and new life outside of what it is intended.

Nothing.
I set it off to the side and began and clean and organize my workspace. I am the worlds worst at keeping organized. One thing I have found is when I have no inspiration, when I clean it helps. The other thing that motivates me to clean is we are going out of town for a few days this week. We are going back to NY to visit with family and friends. I am so excited I just pee'd my pants! I haven't been 'home' in over two years and I am on pins and needles wanting to get up there. I wanted to make something new and fun to wear while I was up there and thought if I cleaned up a little, I would get that inspiration to hunker down and get to work. Normally when I go thru and regroup and re categorize my things, I always stumble upon something that makes me say - "Oh wow, I forgot about you!"
As was the case this morning. As I was cleaning I found a washer. One of those little things I find while out walking that I tuck away for a rainy day. As soon as I touched it, the cleaning stopped and the work began. I dug out my wire, and a couple crystals and this was the outcome -

For part two of the blogger challenge, I feel I copped out a bit with these, but I wanted something new, simple, and versatile. These are great for running around, and for going out to dinner. Jeans and Silk, know what I mean :)

I threw it on a ribbon and called it done.
For part two of the blogger challenge, I feel I copped out a bit with these, but I wanted something new, simple, and versatile. These are great for running around, and for going out to dinner. Jeans and Silk, know what I mean :)

Friday quickie - I am at my dumb
"I am at my dumb" is an expression that was born from a nite of 'porchin it' and has become a household expression.
See, wha hah happened wuz - So many nites are spent on the porch. We get to talk. There is no t.v. no distractions, only the dogs in the yard and the traffic on the road. We talk about our day, our frustrations, plan vacations, defend the righteous and side with the underdog. Because of these nites I have fallen in love with my husband all over again.
Some off these nites are spent with coffee, some off them with beer. One nite in par-tick-you-lar was a nite of beer. Porch eh-teh-cut states that if you go in for a beer, you must always ask the participants if they would like one too. I was asked, in my mind, I declined with - "No thank you, I am done" My mouth decided it was time to play a little trick on me and spouted - "I am at my dumb"
*insert laughter, pointing of fingers, repeating of statement*
*sigh*
It stuck. This statement is interchangeable, that is the beauty of it. For instance -
If you are done, do not want more, etc... I am at my dumb
If you want to lightly pointout someones mistake ...I am at my dumb
If you want to point out that a particular situation is uncomfortable or ridiculous.....I am at my dumb
If you are stooop-eh-fied, impressed, delighted, overwhelmed, exhausted....I am at my dumb
You get the idea. So now that I have taken you on a journey around my elbow to get to my ankle, i'll explain why this blog is about a co-loke-you-all-ism (can't say it much less spell it).
Yesterday, with great enthusiasm I began to work on wrapping the sea glass that was given to me by my friend. I was so thrilled with it when I was finished, I literally sat back in my chair, folded my arms and nodded. This isn't to say that it is a work of art, or that it is going to be my most expensive or used as a way to markets one of my skill sets, this is to say - this piece I made for me - a reflection of me and what I am, personally. I have no intention of selling this, in fact I would almost say this is going to be the piece that defines me - the piece that I wear the most. I don't expect it to speak to everyone, but I hope it may give you a better insight as to who I am.

I got such a surprise last nite when I went up to the mailbox. Inside was a small manilla envelope.....from RINGS AND THINGS!!! It is Aprils blog challenge! I was not expecting this at all! A few days ago on the R/T blog the post was about what do you use for your displays - I thought that was going to be the challenge and what a good one too. BUT NO!!!
*wags her finger at Dave* You are so berry berry sneaky!
Check this out - all these awesome lava beads and "swar-ski" crystals!! I know I am going to shoot my wad and use every piece on one design. I have it knocking around in my head already. And yes - the tootsie roll wrapper, missing the candy. It never fails - I dump the contents of the pkg onto the table, scramble for the tootsie roll first, cram it in my mouth and then rummage thru the goodies that have been sent, all the while making little humming noises while i chew chew chew in happiness............
Ok, now back to the title - I want to stop you here - if you are easily offended at anything, right now just close the blog. If curiosity has gotten the best of you, don't say i didn't warn ya.
March 22 was world wide pillow fight day. Tomorrow Raleigh and several other cities have opted to do it again. You know us southeners - we move at our own pace but we get what needs to be getting done.

I am not going to pass up this fun flash mob event. They encourage costumes and fun pillows.

I am not taking a couch cushion when I can make a fun pillow.
So that is what I did.
I modeled them after the dolls I make - Insert Karma Kritter plug.
My karma kritters and their minis, backpack buddies, are a hit at a local gallery/frame shop. They are colorful stupid little reminders that someone thought enuff of you to give you a goofy gift. That is their intent. I took that idea and upscaled them. James wanted a bear. He wanted a funny roaring bear with claws and fangs and - an-eh-tom-ick-lee correct....*ponders* It is a family event, so I challenged myself to do something that made James happy with his rude bear, but was abstract enuff that it would not appall..offend yes, but not appall. here is his bear - (thus the warning)
Mine, I based on my favorite cartoon -Johnny Quest - Sing it with me - "nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nahnut nahnut nah nah" ... you know you are singing it in your head.
*side note* My biggest heartbreak of my life was when I found out that Race Bannon was a cartoon and I could never grow up to marry him......
Ok, remember the episode where there was an invisible ghost/monster. It wrecked havoc everwhere but no one knew what it was, and then Dr. Quest had the great idea to throw paint ballons or something at it so they could see it?!?! remember!?!?! and it was a big one eye'd monster..remember!!! well i know why he was all crabby and tearing things up, he was married to this.....

Man it is sneaking up on me.
Hey Kids, did you know Aprils birthstone was diamond!?? Of course you did!
Did you know that an alternate birthstone was sapphire? Some of you may not have.
Here is where it gets tricky so keep your hands and feet in the car and the lap bar firmly in place cuz we are going for a ride.....
Diamond and sapphire are a bit pricey for me to work with, and typically faceted/cut to be put in a setting. I am not at that stage yet. I am sure I could wrap them in a creative artsy way, just getting a hold of them is a challenge in itself so we will leave them alone for awhile.
But.......
Did you know that iolite was also called the water sapphire? Did ya? I ADORE iolite - ADORE! It is a beautiful little stone and readily available in many grades. Its color varies slightly but more than not it is a beautiful dark purple/blue. *sigh* Do ya see where I am going here - we are going around our elbow to get to our ankle on this ride to take you from sapphire to iolite. I warned ya to hang on.
It has also been called "Vikings' Compass", because it was used to find the direction of the sun on cloudy days. The stone was cut thin, like a pane of glass and held to the sky. "Light scattered by air molecules is polarized, and the direction of the polarization is at right angles to a line to the sun, even when the sun's disk itself is obscured by dense fog or lies just below the horizon." (From Wiki)
Do ya think, that maybe because I am an adventurous soul, and have a tendancy to wander and explore and have been nicknamed -DOM (Daughter of Magellan -who I know is not a viking, but was still a savvy sailor) by my husband and have a compass tattoo so I always know where I am going, that I would be so drawn to this stone?
Mebbe so. All I know is there is something about iolite that makes me squeal deep in my heart, and instead of a diamond in my wedding band, guess what...yes - I have an iolite.
Nice segway here .......
So in light of that, here are a couple of things I have done with iolite.
Faceted roundells with bali sterling celtic beads
I wear these all the time. I love these little guys. I have a strand of these faceted drops and have been very stingy with them. I think i will keep them all for me :)
Fun quick wrap on a roundel for a small pendant. I wear this one alot too.

DIY - Lightbox - Epic Fail!
*sigh* I am at it again. I am trying to take better pictures of my pieces for the new site. I am not a photographer. i dont 'have an eye for the shot, the setting, the media - anything. BUT... i still have to take pictures. (it takes longer to take the shots than it does to create most of the pieces) I have a good little camera - a Rebel XT by cannon. got it for a song, because the listing price had a typo and they had to honor it. i have tried to learn to use it, honestly - but i fail.
i take my shots, trying to use some light background and some correct lighting ( the lamp over the kitchen table) and then i take the images and work the magic of the Gimp on them, and change the contrast and brightness and sometimes, i get a decent shot.
my camera has a little flip up auto flash. i need a external flash, that would honestly make all the difference in the world, but right now that it low on my list of needs. i will make due with what i have. i get a great deal of satisfaction on being able to produce greatness out of what i have. (i am in denial that i am cheap, ok - denial)
i have heard of light boxes, and have seen a couple, but never really paid much mind to them. i set out the other nite to build one. using 'my lojik' on how the light should work, and should bounce i did this -
I have a cardboard box, tissue paper, foil, and tape
take a box (minus the cat) and line it with white tissue paper
Line the top flaps of the box with the foil
i positioned my desk lamp over the back of the box so i could close the flaps over the top of it. that way the light would 'bounce' on the inside of the box, and reflect on the piece - right???
Wrong - FAIL - every single shot was yellow like this.
My husband the engineer he is steps up to the plate - "what are you doing dear?"
"Making a light box!!!!! can't you tell?!?!!?" I was a bit snippy cuz i was aggrivated at my febel attempts.
he thru out some suggestions - some brilliant ones. dont use floor-es-ant lights - they are too 'harsh'. don't put the light directly over the top of the item - cut the sides out of the box, then put up the paper, and put the light on the outside of the box facing the paper to illuminate it that way .
yes - brilliant.
so - tonite i am redoing the box and we shall see what comes of it.
in the mean time - i am puttin my pieces back out onto the kitchen table on a piece of light fabric and taking pictures.
it works....

Some fun
I finally got to sit down the other day and play with my new supplies. I know I know, it is spring - but i have always been drawn to the warmer earth tones. AND - what else to go better with the new filigree findings I got.
I have never been a fan of pearls and haven't worked much with them. (they scare me) These jumped out at me - right off the table they did - while i was standing in the check out line at the bead show. the vendors are sneaky, they do this on purpose. They keep you right there, in front of all the beads - taunting you, tempting you to buy more. They know your weaknesses!!! THEY PEY UPON YOUR LACK OF SELF CONTROL!!! ONE MORE STRAND, JUST ONE MORE STRAND YOU KNOW YOU NEED IT!!! YOU KNOW YOU HAVE TO HAVE IT!!!

i wanted something fun and drapey with lots of random, so this is what happened.
The Fancy Spade Filigree, (love these!) and the 4mm Round Filigree bead, I picked up from Rings & Things
The Chain came from Firemountain Gems
The pearls came from O mega gems
The random stones faceted carnelian, faceted tiger eye, and red agate came from Sedona Stones.
I have never been a fan of pearls and haven't worked much with them. Growing pains
Am working feverishly to get my site up and going. One step at a time.
It is kinda funny, as I am working on it, it is live. all my mistakes and blunders are there, hanging out for everyone to see. at the same time, it is fun to watch the progress.
leave it to me to break something. i am a natural at software QA. When I thought I was adding a category, I was actually editing the actual category...it no longer displays as category - it is now necklaces. so everything I put on the site is in the necklaces category (even tho it isn't)
my husband did some head scratching last nite wondering how in the heck i did it....
am telling ya - if you have something that the warranty is about to expire on, give it to me, I can break it :)

I have it - that is for sure. I am sitting here, watching the clock and slurping on my coffee, and nothing. NOTHING!
*think* *think*
Ok, I take that back. I have a lot rolling around in the vast expanse that is my mind but I just can't get a grasp on it. I make a swipe for it, and it slips thru my fingers. I see it, *reaches out* *snap* it is fleeting. It giggles running passed me in that taunting teasing way. Those thoughts dash passed me waving note cards with quips of - 'growing your business' 'what is an affiliate program' 'repurpose project' and the list keeps going. These are all things i want to research for myself and to share with others. I just can't come up with the words.

I am now focused on the whole 'writers block' and nearly in a panic - what if I can't come up with any ideas for days - DAZE! Then it hit me - labradorite.
Did you know that labradorite is used to prevent or dispel writers block?!?!?! This is one of my favorite stones. I love the flash of fire when the stone catches the sun just right. The dark cobalt carries over to lighter blues and greens with a flash, as it seems to flirt with me when it does so.
I carry several pocket stones, fidget stones, or worry stones if you will. I choose them for my mood and also for what I will be facing in that particular day. Today I do not have a labradorite with me...dagnabit. Maybe the belief in the metaphysical properties of the stones is enuff - as I look up - I have in fact written a post for the day, and it seems my writers block may have been lifted!
