Red Dyed Howlite Flower Earrings with Moonstone Accents

I got a strand of these cute little 15mm dyed howlite flower shaped beads from Fire Mountain Gems. The strand I got was multi colored with orange, white, yellow, green, hot pink and blue. 

(The multi color strand is no longer available, but they do have a light blue strand that is only $1.00!!)

These beads are light weight, and make the cutest earrings!

Howlite is the stone that helps to aid in self awareness and and improving ones emotional well being. It just seem perfect to  add a  faceted moonstone heishi cut beads to accent the design and for the metaphysical properties of encouraging hopes and dreams. 

I just love how they turned out!

Fresh off the Bench! Sterling and American Beauty Turquoise

These are those everyday earrings :)

So easy

Cut 18" sterling wire to 4.5"

Use your round nose pliers to make a small loop on the ends.

Find the middle and bend the wire up - using an ink pen or something similar to bend the wire around to make the bottom of the loop.

Hammer slightly to give strength and texture

Add any stone, bead, crystal so forth for a focal

Attach a jump ring to the top loops and add an earring wire

Wear and be fabulous!

American beauty turquoise is a beautiful bright blue stone, full of healing. So much healing in fact, it is called the Master Healer.  No wonder people who are on a spiritual journey are drawn to turquoise!

Re Purposed Earring Fun!

Re purposing is fun! Heheh sounds like a Saturday morning psa from the 70's :)

I have a tub of pieces parts that are left over from a previous project, or are one offs, or are from other jewelry or items that will be re purposed into new jewelry. Pretty much what all these components are!

The rings are from a bracelet I found at the Good Will, they are sterling. The wood disks came in a little box I picked up at a yard sale, the faceted glass and flat disks are from the same bracelet I got at the Good Will, and the sliver tone balls are from a bracelet that was given to me by a friend that broke, and I lost most of the pieces :( Now if I could just get a handle on how to use that pesky camera

Giving new life to old jewelry is fun :)

More Summer fun with Art Beads!

I found a little time to myself this morning and wanted to get this bracelet made. I wanted the focal to be the lampwork beads (I am in love) and I 'wrangled the random' a bit to gave it some order.

Once more to the garden - Re purpose project

Still running with yesterdays theme of the re purpose of the Octopus's garden, I made these bracelets.

They are VERY similar, but that is ok. These freshwater pearls are so much fun and so active, I couldn't stop at one. I used a random slant on the original focal idea with the flower of the Octopus's garden necklace and just added faceted Czech crystal and sterling daisy spacers..







This one I used groups of seven and separated them with the daisy spacers and the Czech crystals.



I love looking at it on my wrist - it makes me giggle!!

Octopus's Garden - Re do

Remember this - Octopus's Garden? I made that necklace trying to spark some creativity and never was super happy with the design, so I gave it a second try, and gave it new life.

I removed the pearl cluster and added hand wound links of green garnet on sterling and added some little flower beads from a re purposed necklace. This one is ready to wear and ready for spring!

Fun earring designs

My daughter came into town for a whirlwind weekend trip. We had the best time while she was here - it was way to short, and I was grateful for every moment.

When she left on Sunday, fighting the urge to cry all day, I sat down and got busy with some projects. I had fun with a couple pairs of earrings and I'll show these to you today!

These were fun to make and surprisingly light. I used the lamp work beads that were in a little 'barter' package from Lisa at A Bead A Day along with some 47-402-SP 14 ga copper wire and 47-406-SP 22 ga wire I have from Rings & Things.

I cut a piece of the 14 ga wire about 3 1/2" long. Hammered one end flat to stop the bead. Slid on the bead and them shaped the tail of the wire. Then using 47-406-SP 22 ga wire, I wrapped the top of the copper wire. I stopped half way thru the wrap, made a wire wrapped loop to hang the ear wires from and then continued on with the wrap.

I have a lot of ideas I want to get to this week - hopefully I can show them all to you!

Wrap it up - I'll take it!

Got a request for a couple 'purpose pendants'. I love making these. The whole process is very therapeutic to me.

This first one, the customer wanted a pendulum for a friend, wanted it simple, and it was for a 'pisces'. The research began. I found that pisces are imaginative and sensitive, compassionate and kind, selfless and unworldly, and intuitive and sympathetic. Sounds like jasper to me :)

I used jasper and iolite for this pendulum. Jasper - nurturing stone, bringer of joy. Iolite - awakens inner knowledge, gives direction. Silver - energized the stones



This request was a bit more difficult. This customer has a family member who is battling cancer. She wanted a pendant that would keep them focused and positive. Recovery from anything is sped up with positive thinking and staying focused on a goal. Treat the patient, mind body and soul.

Fun pair of copper earrings I made this morning to go with the necklace I was wearing. I created the large links by wrapping 14 ga copper around my ring mandrel. Then I hammered the links to strengthen, flatten and texturize the copper. Then I had to deal with the break in the link. I have my torch, but that is as far as I have gotten. Still need flux, copper solder, pickling solution, tumbler.........

So I did the next best thing. I call it a weld wrap :) I just wrap the link with a smaller ga wire, here I used 22 ga, so it covers the gap of the loop, and then give it a good mash with my pliers. Decorative and functional!


This was my morning, between cups of coffee, cleaning up after the cat, wearing out the dogs and laundry - i am ready for a nap :)

Queen of Hearts Furnace Glass earrings - ArtBeads Blogging Group

Still playing with the Queen of Hearts furnace beads* from Art Beads.

This was all done free form. I made the curl at the bottom then hammered the curl for texture and strength. Then I slid on the furnace bead, a sterling spacer and a crystal, and made my wire wrapped loop at the top. The left over tail, I bent around my finger brought it down the side, pinched it on the bottom and brought it back up the other side, bent around my finger and then used the end to wrap around the top.

I did more shaping with my fingers and tools to make it look like a heart. I wasn't going for perfection here. I wanted it to have a free flow look. Once I had it shaped the way I wanted, I hammered it to give it more strength and then added the ear wires. I was amazed at how light they were.





Then I noticed. I forgot to add the crystal to the second earring!!!! They don't match!

Now wouldn't you know it, that the ONLY time my husband has complimented me on my earrings, it is a pair that don't match!! You heard me - I wore them out anyways! I wore them out to dinner. I laft when he told me he really liked them and explained to him they don't match. He sed, That's ok, I can only see one side of your head at a time anyways!!!

Valentines day - The Art Beads Way!

I showed you the fun beads I received from ArtBeads in this previous post and this morning I found the time I have been looking for all week to sit down and create. I fell in love with the Queen of Hearts Fire Design Furnace Glass* as soon as I laid eyes on their shiney cylindrical goodness and used them for the bulk of this design.

I combined two strands by double stringing random beads with the beading wire. What this means is, I strung the first strand randomly, then as I strung the second strand, I would run the wire thru a few of the beads of the first strand and then continue to string it randomly as well. The third strand I weaved (wove?) thru the 'loops' made from the double stringing. These three strands were a random mix of the Queen of Hearts furnace glass* , along with beads I had purchased from ArtBeads 4mm Fire Polish Mix Red Tones (50 Pack), TOHO™ Bead Round 6/0 Opaque-Lustered Pearl White 8g Bag, and added some great accent beads from my inventory - red Czech glass, sterling daisies, Czech black glass, and a black designer seed bead mix.

I added two separate red strands of seed beads, one I weaved thru the gaps again, and the second I made a bit shorter to show off the Sterling/Resin 16mm Pendant - Red XOXO Flowers*
The pendant is attached to the necklace with a jump ring making it easy to detach if I want something less 'valentiney' and more basic. I love the versatility of it.

With the tangle and the firey reds and the smokey grays - it reminds me of a firey love affair. So I have named it - Torrid Tangle - which seems to be fitting.




I am working on earrings and a bracelet using the Queen of Hearts collection from the selection of Fire Designs collection of furnace beads at ArtBeads. I'll show you those tomorrow!

Fun with Art Beads - Cubic Zirconia

Back in November I posted about the beautiful Cubic Zirconia's I received as part of the blogging for beaders group from Art Beads.

Over the weekend I got some time for myself and played around with an idea I have had in my head.

I made a loop out of 14 ga sterling and hammered the loop to give it texture and strength. Then I used a 28 ga. silver plated wire to wrap the portion of the loop where the ends meet to hide ends and to give it a focus. In the wrap I added one of the CZ beads to draw you eye to it.

I made wire coils and put them on the ends of a piece of leather to use as the connecting point for the design. I made wire wrapped loops and attached the hammered piece to the coil connectors and added the yellow CZ's. Next I added a bit of chain using jump rings to the wire wrapped loop and then created charms from the other CZ's and here you have it!

Rings & Things Blogger Challenge - A little bit of love!!

Finally got the time to sit down and do some work this weekend, and no, my work room is still a disaster. I have decided that I cannot work in a clean and organized environment.

That being said, I wanted to work with the heart lampwork beads I got from Rings & Things for the blogger challenge. These big beads are heavy and because of their size I think they look great on leather. They also have a 'tween' feeling to me. I wanted it fun, leather, bright and youthful. I decided to go with a lariat style necklace. I cut the leather 38", so when doubled it would hang about the same as a 20" necklace. I wound coils of 18 ga. sterling to use as anchors on the ends of the leather and attached 5 links of sterling cable chain to the coils. I packed the links with beads, using a white and red theme. Shells, pearls, sterling, seed beads, jade, like I sed - packed :)

Using the lampwork beads as the focal of each chain link, I had to add a sterling daisy spacer to the bottom of the head pin to keep it from slipping thru the hole of the bead. It made a nice look.

This one I had a blast with. I started out making a pendant ,but it quickly turned into what I think would look awesome on the top of a stick pin. I used 18 ga. sterling to create the free form pendant. Then hammered the silver to harden it and give it texture. Using 24 ga sterling wire, I wrapped seed beads, coral, labradorite and rhodonite to add a little bit of love and peace to the design. Topped it off with a length of sterling chain attached with jump rings.

I don't have any stick pins, but that didn't stop me! If anyone would have them, Rings & Things would. I was not disappointed!

All you would have to do is shape the hook into a loop and attach it to the bail on the pendant.

I contacted Dave at Rings & Things to see if that clutch would work on the safety pin. Dave took the time out of his day to find this answer for me. He confirmed with one of their designers that yes in fact, it should fit perfectly!

A little something to hold on to

Sometimes we all need a little something to hold on to to remind us there is a higher power, or to remind us of our good qualities, or even to give us that little bit of luck we need that day.

Gemstones portray that 'little bit of something' to me. They are easy to carry around or wear as jewelry. I can easily reach up and touch a pendant as a reminder, or reach into my pocket and feel their warmth and reassurance. Silly to some I know, but it is the same as throwing salt over your shoulder when you spill it, crossing your fingers for good luck, keeping your St. Christopher metal on the rear view mirror of your car, or not jinxing your team by always wearing the same outfit to the game. All of these are our little traditions or superstitions that make us feel better about us.

With this in mind, I made this pendant for my sister in law. I chose the stones for their meanings and 'powers'. She is gentle and loving soul, her life is her family and friends, a teacher, with genius creativity.

I wrapped garnet, citrine, iolite and carnelian to the crystal, which is is the focal, which amplifies the qualities of the stones.




Garnet: Removes negativity, career success, self confidence.
Citrine: Success, intuition, creativity
Iolite: Intuition, inner knowledge
Carnelian: Creativity, peace, luck

Sometimes keeping it simple can make some of the most interesting pieces. I love these little lamp work hearts I received from Rings & Things. For being so cute, they are so versatile. I am hoping to show this to you this week.

The holes in the beads are large, so adding a small sterling daisy spacer was a must to keep the head pins from sliding thru. I attached them directly to the toggle. And added a single swarovski crystal to the connector loop.

It's on 20" of tightly braided leather. Keep in mind when you are braiding leather, add an extra 5" to the length when cutting the strips. You will loose that much if maybe not more depending on the tightness of the braid.



It looks so great on a sweater!

Rings & Things Blogger Challenge -

I finally got some time to myself and sat down to play :)

I had this fun elastic bracelet of onyx and quartz with a honkin' jasper focal. The bracelet is too tight and I thought I would re string it so I would wear it more. After I had popped it, the thought process began. I began to build a new bracelet using the filigree I had received from Rings & Things. The bracelet turned into a necklace. I couldn't stop adding things!

From the items I received from Rings & Things, here is what I used.

*44-165-9 - Fancy space - gunmetal - filigree

*44-150-9 - Filigree harvest - gunmetal

I was concerned about the gunmetal coating on the filigree that it may flake off. I was very impressed in the production of these items. They held up very well and I didn't nick the finish at all.

*28-000-001-021 - 10mm faceted puffed coin -black

I like these little beads. They have some heft to them, it gives them a bit of a crystal feel. I don't feel like I will break or chip them when working with them.

I used symmetry for a change in this piece. I wanted the design to balance out the pattern of the focal. The pattern on the focal, looks like someone playing the piano, can you see it? They are bent over concentrating on the piece, playing away. In my head it is a loud crashing song, music that would portray a summer thunder storm.


Here is a close up of the filigree




I love the three strands of sterling that close out the design. You can see the music flowing thru the piece. The filigree is the swell of the music, the thunder and the lightening, softening back down to the faceted chinese glass, the rain. It swells one last time on the second filigree, the last clap of thunder and then lightly travels out the shiney strands of sterling chain. The clouds break, the sun shines thru and the rain slowly stops.

Oh those pesky pendants

A few days ago while organizing my work room, I ran across these pendants.


Working with a pre-made pendant is a real challenge for me. I can't seem to always work them into a design without them being a glaring distraction from the whole piece. I dont' want to just put a pendant on a chain or a thong either. What fun is that. Then the thought hit me - use that chain or leather thong, but do it a bit differently. I used three pieces of leather and some big hole sterling barrels. Slid the barrels onto the leather, gave em a bit of a mash to hold them in place and WOW.

Simple, to the point and makes a statement all it's own.

Commissioned pieces

My friend Vanessa went to the bead show in Franklin - it is a G&LW show - a big one.

She came home with several strands of magnesite and lava, several pendants, copper findings, coral and chalcedoy. She wanted me to make necklaces for christmas presents for her to give out.



Well sure I will for her. Vanessa is a dear friend and the person I blame for getting the beading/stringing bug. She is a vendor at the flea market and sells free form stones, pocket stones, strands of stone beads, finished jewelry and several other things. She is a big supporter and a fan of my work, which that in itself is reason enuff not to say no.

Part of the problem with this type of a commission is she sees in her head what she wants, obviously, she bought the stones, but she trusts me to make it for her.

I set out this morning to start on these pieces. She wants a total of six necklaces from this wad of stuffs - which it doable. There is more than enough material to do so. The problem is, I don't see what she sees. I am having a hard time coming up with different designs, or, more so, even wanting to work with these stones. They don't interest me, so I am having a hard time creating with them.

I knocked out the easy first - earrings .






























I added some of my beads and findings to flesh them out more. These would be way too heavy if I hadn't have broke it up some.

This one I am not happy with. I more than likely will de construct it tonite and do it again. Lava, broke up with citrine and carnelian. I think the focal is a fire crab agate. Mebbe. I was very disappointed in the clasp. I am sure it is a fluke but it is such a waste. I had ordered them from Rings & Things. The wire hook broke off of it as I was attaching it to the jump ring.






My cat was so jacked up on cat nip all morning, and was insisting on getting into everyone of my shots.















This one I am more happy with. Combining wire wrapping and stringing. These stones are sooo heavy. I don't know how comfortable it will be to wear for any lenght of time.

Rings and Things Sept. blogger challenge - Green Man Necklace - Tutorial

I was very excited when I got home last nite to sit down and make this necklace. I was all ready to document the process when my camera decided it was not going to co operate. Not all of my shots turned out, most were blurry and I apologize. I think I got the jest of it tho and want to share it with you today.

I was browsing thru Rings & Things' charms section looking for something to inspire me. That is when I saw the 'Green Man' charm. Instantly the gears began to turn and rumble thru my head. I clicked it into my wish list, so I wouldn't loose it, and the hunt began. Next the moss agate pendant - oh how glorious. Even tho I had mentioned in my last post that I had grossly mistaken the size of this beautiful piece, now, after seeing it in the design, I wouldn't change a thing. It is fabulous!

Green Man is, by some counts, a vegetative deity- representing rebirth, renaissance, or representing the cycle of growth each spring. Moss agate is the perfect stone to pair with this. Moss agate is sometimes called the “gardener’s stone” due to its mystical properties of helping ensure a full crop.

Soon it all came together in this list -

1 - Strand of 10 x 10 faceted fan beads - multistone.

1 - Sterling silver leaf face charm

1 - Moss agate T-Drop pendant

And I added from my own supplies -

Leather cord

Sterling toggle (one very similar can be found here at Rings & Things)

18 ga sterling wire

20 ga sterling wire

24 ga sterling wire


First cut a 7 1/2" piece of 18 ga sterling wire. Creat a spiral on one end. I chose the spiral design, just as everything else. They all have a corresponding meaning. The spiral represent in Celtic lore - symbolizes growth, birth and expansion of consciousness. Bend the wire at the top of the spiral to a 45 degree angle and slide the wire thru the pendant. On the back of the pendant, push the wire up again at a 45 degree angle - something like this.

Look at the pattern in this stone!!!!!




At the top of the pendant, make a wire wrapped loop. This will be the bail of the pendant.



Before committing the wrap, rest the body of the toggle in the bend of the wire and finish the wrap so the toggle is attached.



Bend the wire over the top of the pendant and back thru the hole.




This is where I wish I had some rubber tipped tools, as to not mar the metal. Then again. It is not meant to be perfect, it is a more organic look to reflect the Green Man and the Moss agate. Pushing the wire back thru and keeping it flush against the pendant was tedious.



Bring the wire back up the pendant and wrap the tail around the wire wrap of the bail. Don't make it perfect. Sloppy is in.



Set the pendant aside. Cut three 21" pieces of leather.



Use your 20 ga wire and create a two cones.



"Screw" the cone, large side down, over the three pieces of leather, just till the tips are poking out. Give the last coil a squeeze to anchor it to the leather






Now give the coil itself a bit of a mash.



Here I had to enlist the help of my husband to hold the end of the leather strands so I could braid them. I did a very tight braid and I should add, shortened the lenght of the leather to 16", which is where I wanted it to be. If you want a longer necklace, adjust the lenght of the leather. Just remember, after the braiding it will be five inches shorter. On the other end of the braid, 'screw' on the cone and repeat the steps as before to anchor the coils. Trim the excess leather.



Bend the last coil out to a 45 degree angle. This will be your connector link.



Attach the toggle ends to the connector links. To do this, just bend the link out slightly and slide on the eye of the toggle and push the link back in place. You can even 'wiggle' the connector link, by pushing it open and closed several times to 'heat' up the sterling and temper it so to speak. It will strenghten the silver.



Attach the charm to the round body of the toggle.



Now lets add some more!! Cut a four inch piece of 24 ga. wire.



Make a wire wrapped loop at the top, and connect it to the body of the round toggle.





Choose one of your faceted fans for this charm and slide it onto the wire. Bend the wire so the wrap it positioned at the peak of the bead. Do a sloppy wrap with the wire, starting at the anchor wrap and back down toward the bead. You can crimp the end and tuck it back up under the wrap.



Here is where my camera quit - My battery stopped on me - so i'll explain. I used a total of four faceted fans for the charms. I attached two to the toggle and two to the bail.

And this is how it turned out -





I am so thrilled with this piece. This may be a keeper :)
